Orange police turn to CCTV
Posted Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:01pm AEDT

At least six people have been fined or sentenced with the help of images from the CCTV network in Orange's CBD.

The Orange City Council says in the 15 months since the cameras have been installed, police have made 44 requests for data and provided the council with details of 27 of those.

They say CCTV footage has been used in court action resulting in three people being fined, two sentenced and one being given a suspended sentence.

The council says in at least one instance the footage has shown an alleged assault did not occur, saving police time.

Originally there were to be 10 cameras, but one was not needed because the new police station has its own CCTV system.

The Council is now considering putting the spare camera in Post Office Lane.
