CCTV Next Step in Tackling Alice Crime

The locations of Alice Springs new CCTV cameras were unveiled today by Chief Minister Paul Henderson and Alice Springs Mayor Damien Ryan.

Mr Henderson said an agreement had been signed between the Government and the Council that would result in an additional 16 cameras in the CBD.

“This will bring the number of cameras in the CBD to 30 – another important step forward in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour,” Mr Henderson said.

“We believe these CCTV cameras will deter offenders, help police identify offenders and make Alice Springs a safer place.

“We believe people should be able to go about their daily business without worrying about crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Preventing this type of behaviour also helps local businesses and helps the important tourism industry in Alice Springs.”

The Government is providing funding of $1.1 for the Alice Council to install the cameras with a further $200,000 a year for monitoring.

The new cameras will be installed in the Alice Springs CBD focussing on Hartley Street, Bath Street, Parsons Street, Gregory Terrace and Leichhardt Terrace.

The Minister for Central Australia, Karl Hampton, said the expansion of the CCTV system in Alice complemented the Government’s other initiatives to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.

“These include the new Alice Springs Police Beat – which will increase police visibility in the CBD – the Safer Streets initiative – which will boost police numbers by 11 this financial year and the Alice Springs Youth Action Plan,” Mr Hampton said.

“This Government is tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and is serious about putting in place measures to help at risk children make the right decisions early in life
